Rationale
Pink isn’t just a portfolio theme…it represents me.
Just like most little girls, I was obsessed with pink when I was younger – pink shoes, pink cosmetics, pink dresses. I was the ultimate ‘girly-girl’. The fun part about this is that I never really
grew out of it! To this day I feel that this colour is a great representation of my personality and I wanted to express this through this photography portfolio.
In creating this photography portfolio, I wanted to immerse viewers in my world — one that’s awash with shades of pink, a colour that not only matches my personal branding colours of pink
and orange but also reflects my sweet and “cutesy” personality. Pink has always been a part of my outward identity and a good representation of my inner personality if it were a colour, and with these images, I’ve interwoven that personal connection into my professional work. The collection showcases a blend of product photography, which has been a previous strength of mine, and a newer interest in fashion photography.
Setting up the scenes and styling the outfits for the models was the most enjoyable part of this project. Each image, from the spilled nail polish to the pink-frosted birthday cake, is crafted to be more than just visually appealing; they are snapshots that capture a narrative. The cake was made to suit my current branding (and personality – sweet) and therefore has my branding logo piped on the top of it – a fun detail that made the shoot all the more special for me.
The images are designed to engage the viewer, like the one with the lips through the pink paper, which adds a bold twist to the theme of pink. This image is an idea that has lived in my Pinterest boards for many years. I deeply enjoy the texture of the paper and the lips along with the shine of the lipgloss and glitter in it, however, for this shoot I wasn’t able to capture both the lips and the paper texture in detail, which leaves something to improve on in the future.
Capturing the model with the pink jacket ties back to the colour theme and brings a fashion-forward edge to the portfolio. Fashion is something that I have started to appreciate more and more over the last semester and this love stems from looking at fashion photography for inspiration in the other areas of my art and design projects. Being able to create a portfolio that I feel so closely resembles the inspiration that I always looked up to has been so enjoyable – a full circle moment.
In conclusion, this portfolio feels like I’ve brought my inner child to life through the lens of my camera. The joy of playing with pink, setting up scenes, and capturing moments has been like reliving the fun and imagination of childhood. It’s been such a great experience that I plan to keep this pink theme going in my future projects. I’m even going to take this theme with me on vacation, finding ways to sprinkle a bit of pink magic wherever I go. With a camera in hand and a world tinted in shades of pink, I look forward to the next chapter, ready to paint the world in many hues of pink!
